No User Authentication - Quick Implementation Guide

  1. Overview
  2. In the software_DNA Control Panel
  3. Implementing "No User Authentication" with the DNA API
  4. Viewing and Managing License Activation Codes in software_DNA

Enabling User Authentication is highly recommended but in some situations and for some applications, you may want to disable User Authentication and the need for a License Code Password knowing the software application is still "locked" to a computer. Before a User can re-install the application on a new computer, the User must remember to De-Activate the License on the current computer, or request your assistance to reset the License from the DNA Control Panel.

Most of the software_DNA Licensing features and options are fully supported when User Authentication is disabled, but with the following constraints:

  • Multi-User ("x"-seat) licensing is not supported

  • The TurnKey (Do-All) Activation API Call is not supported

  • Users do not have access to the License Manager to manage their License, although they can still retrieve the list of Licenses associated with their email address, in case they have forgotten or lost their License Activation Code

  • Users do not have access to the public Offline Activation portal, although you can continue to perform Offline Activations on behalf of your users from the DNA Control Panel.

  • some coding changes for the software_DNA API calls are required in your application to implement

  • Once the Product is ACTIVE, this setting can not be changed

Supported Activation Methods

Custom and StreamLined Activation methods support the No User Authentication scenario.

The TurnKey Activation method does NOT support the No User Authentication scenario.

In the software_DNA Control Panel

To disable User Authentication for a Product, view the Product Configuration and edit () the License Settings for this product.

NOTE: Once the product is ACTIVE, you will not be able to change this option. Perform all your testing under TESTING MODE

Implementing "No User Authentication" in your App

The No User Authentication scenario is implemented using existing API calls and activation process flows. Consult the Developer Guide for details on process flow and exact API call syntax.

The key change is using a <derived_password> in all the API calls that require a License Password.

The <derived_password> can be any 1-16 character string :

  • a Default password, hard-coded in your App and which will be used for all License Activation codes for this product.
  • a Hash string that is derived from a unique and persistent identifier, for example, the License Activation Code itself.

The License is always locked to the computer, with any password and continues to be secure against piracy.

Viewing and Managing License Activation Codes in software_DNA

Use the Codes -> Search menu to view details on a License Activation Code. The usual License information will be shown and allow you to change some License settings, reset the email address, the Re-activation Lockout, etc..

To disable a License Code, we recommended the use of the Revoke / Ban option.
